Fifth Grade News

September 2011

Welcome to 5th grade!  I can't wait for this year to begin!  See you soon!

Class Announcements
Reading
The focus of our first unit will review the six reading strategies; predict, infer, question, evaluate, clarify, and summarize.

Following our review unit, we will begin talking about theme and how characters respond to the conflict/drama in the story.

Math
Our first math unit is measurement.  The main focus will be on converting from one measurement to another.  It is expected that students have mastered all of their multiplication and division facts!  Please practice identifying the correct unit for a specific substance.  For example, what unit of measurement would you use for measuring the milk in your cereal?  A cup.

Students should be practicing their flashcards at home for at least 10 minutes a night a few times a week.

Science
We will be learning about and using the scientiffic method.  Students will be doing a science experiment in small groups in September.  During the second semester, students will be expected to perform a science experiment and create a display board which will be displayed at the Eastview Science Fair.
Reading Logs
It’s time to start reading! Reading logs will be handed out on the first day of school. Please make sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes a night. The goal is to read 1000 minutes (may need to read more than 20 minutes a night) for the Septemeber wii party.
Please sign agendas and reading logs each night—even on the weekends.

Each student also has an AR goal set for the quarter. When students are reading at home, encourage them to tell you about what they have read and summarize the story for you.

Social Studies
Throughout the year we will using our map reading skills.  A Daily Geograpy packet will be handed out every Monday and will be due every Fridad.  We will not have Daily Geo packets on short weeks.

In September we will be studying Early American Explores.

EPTO
Please join us for the first Eastview Parent Teacher Organization meeting on Tuesday, September 15th. The meeting will take place in the Eastview Library at 3:30 p.m. See you there!

Library

In order to receive our first Shelf Elf Award in library everyone needs to turn in their books on time! Books are due on Monday mornings!

Writing
Students are expected to read and write in cursive in 5th grade with the exception of spelling class.  If your child is struggling, I'd be happy to send some extra practice sheets home.  Please sit with your child while he/she is practicing their cursive to ensure they are forming their letters correctly.

Students will be writing a personal narrative during the month of September.

Agendas
Your child should be bringing you his/her agenda each night.  Please do not sign the agenda until all homework is completed.  If your child has completed the work at school, he/she should be putting a checkmark after the assignment in their agenda.  That work should be in their take-home folder.  Please look over the work with your child.
